The New Mayor Vows a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in First Speech
On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his term.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.
Rejecting suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”
Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles
Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.
The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.
An Ambitious Platform
Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:
- Universal childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for about 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating Political Headwinds
The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.
Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.
The Basic Challenges of Governing
Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.
As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
